Get Your Free Departure Checklist

OK, you've made your holiday plans. You're ready to pack. Let's look at a pre-departure checklist for things other than clothes.

The very first thing to check is your passport. If you're traveling out of your home country, is it current? Did you get any visas that are necessary? This is your responsibility whether you are on your own or on a tour. Make copies of your passport to take with you and to leave with relatives or friends.

It never hurts to check to see if there are any travel advisories for the countries you will be visiting. (Many governments issue travel advisories... check with your own government and another one or two for a rounded view.)

You should be up to date on any vaccinations that are recommended or required.

Know whether your airlines tickets are paper tickets or e-tickets. If they are paper tickets, make sure to take them with you. If they are e-tickets, take documentation with you.... make sure your pre-departure checklist includes the printout of your confirmation.

Decide how you are going to deal with money. Are you going to take traveler's checks? If you do, be sure to store the documentation and numbers separately from the traveler's checks themselves in case of loss.

You want to have a safe place or two to store your money and valuables.... something like a money belt. If you're traveling with a partner, split things up between you.

You'll probably be using your ATM. Find out what the daily withdrawal limit is.... and know what that means in the currency you will be withdrawing. 300 US Dollars is less than 300 Euros. Make sure that your PIN will work at your destination. Contact your credit card companies to tell them you will be traveling.

If you're packing a camera, make sure you have plenty of batteries and/or battery chargers.... and the plug adaptors that will allow you to plug them in! Make sure you have enough memory or film. Sure you can buy it there, but you don't want to miss the perfect picture while your looking for it.

Here's a good one for your pre-departure checklist.... Pack any ID cards that you might need. Cards that might get you discounts such as student IDs or Auto Club cards (like AAA in the U.S.) or Senior Group Cards (like AARP in the U.S.)

You should pack a little more prescription medication than you will need in case your return is delayed. Also pack an extra set of glasses or contact lenses. And you should have a copy of prescriptions for both glasses and drugs in case of an emergency.

It's a good idea to leave a copy of your itinerary with someone, and contact numbers if you have them.

Find out the address and phone number of your country's embassy in the country you are visiting. Some governments suggest that you register with the embassy so they know you are in the country. While this may seem a little extreme, it makes things easier for your embassy if there is a natural disaster or general emergency.

There are many things to think about when you are preparing for a vacation. This pre-departure checklist only includes some of the things you might forget. Make your own checklist, then when you get on the road, you'll have a great time because you didn't forget anything.

Honeymoon in South Africa and Romantic Getaways

South Africa is one of the top travel destinations in the world, and is an especially popular choice for honeymoons. The excellent weather coupled with splendidly diverse scenery means that newlyweds can enjoy a variety of romantic getaways in South Africa.

From the balmy subtropical climate in KwaZulu-Natal, to the barren beauty of the Karoo, the lush and forested coastal mountains of the Garden Route and the typically African game-filled savannah grasslands of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, South Africa has something for everyone.

In addition to the wide variety of landscapes and experiences available in South Africa, international honeymooners often find that when it comes to value for money, South Africa is an excellent choice. European and North American visitors can enjoy five-star accommodation and dining for a fraction of what it would cost at home.

Honeymoons in South Africa can be tailored to each couple's particular taste. Some may opt for more rustic luxury, Big Five game viewing and romantic bush dinners in the Kruger National Park while other couples may prefer a more cosmopolitan break at one of Cape Town's elegant city hotels or barefoot luxury along the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. The choices are virtually endless.

The Fairest Cape

Cape Town has a wealth of scenery capable of treating couples to a romantic honeymoon. For couples who enjoy beaches, Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard hotels in popular locations such as Camps Bay are ideal. Cape Town's vibrant V&A Waterfront complex features a number of exclusive and well-appointed hotels like the Cape Grace and the Table Bay Hotel. These hotels provide opulent accommodation in the heart of the Waterfront where guests will find a wide range of shops, restaurants and activities.

Outside Cape Town, the Cape offers endless choices. The Whale Coast is a popular tourist route just over an hour and a half from Cape Town. Characterised by quaint seaside towns and pristine beaches, this area is popular with local and foreign tourists alike. The Grootbos Private Game Reserve, a luxury eco-tourism resort in a protected nature reserve, is a well positioned base from which to relax and explore in the area.

The Cape Winelands are seated in the mountains of the Boland and feature historic towns such as Franschhoek, world famous for its culinary and viticultural excellence, and Stellenbosch which is often considered the heart of the Cape Wine Route. Honeymoons taken in the area are set against panoramic mountain views, luxurious and historic wine estates and quiet surroundings.

Newlyweds who enjoy being pampered can embellish themselves at Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa where they will have the opportunity to enjoy good wine and food, beautiful scenery and luxurious spa treatments. A little down the road in Stellenbosch, the Lanzerac Hotel and Spa offers guests a similar experience.

Unmatched beauty in the Garden Route

The Garden Route offers honeymoon getaways amongst some of South Africa's most spectacular scenery. Towns such as Plettenberg Bay, Nature's Valley and Knysna are set against dramatic and densely forested mountain ranges. The Knysna forest and lagoon create an otherworldly beauty to suit the legend and mystery in which the area is steeped.

For those that enjoy world-class golf courses and unadulterated luxury in a maritime environment, the Pezula Resort Hotel and Spa in Knysna is the perfect choice. Tucked away near a secluded beach, Pezula's luxury villas offer guests privacy and modern convenience.

If an intimate beach hotel setting is preferable to a luxurious golf resort, this can be found a little further East of Knysna in Plettenberg Bay. 'Plett', as it is known by the locals, is a bustling seaside town hemmed in by striking mountains and expansive crescent beaches. Plettenberg Park Hotel and Spa hotel offers honeymooners accommodation in luxurious and well-appointed sea and lake-facing suites.

The Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape offers a wealth of private game reserves and accompanying luxury lodges. Invigorating activities, fine dining under the African night sky and game viewing opportunities set the scene for a memorable getaway. The Pumba Private Game Reserve offers five star accommodation in a Big Five reserve. For a coastal setting, Diaz 15 House on the Beach in Jeffrey's Bay conveys a modern yet relaxed setting in this seaside town where sun, sea and sand is all part of the surfer lifestyle.

KwaZulu-Natal ' Fun in the sun

Which area offers visitors snow-capped mountains during winter, warm seas and great weather all year round, endless golden beaches and some of the finest game reserves in South Africa? KwaZulu-Natal of course! The province is best known for its laid back atmosphere, enviable weather and popular coastline.

KZN has many opportunities for quiet and secluded getaways. The cities are well populated but there are many sizeable game reserves in all areas of the province. The Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park and Hluhluwe Game Reserve in Zululand are possibly two of the most well-known. There are a number of favourite spots for romantic honeymoon getaways in KwaZulu-Natal. These include sub-tropical escapes to the Elephant Coast, the exclusive and luxurious North Coast, the tranquil and serene South Coast and the Drakensberg Mountains which are situated inland.

The Elephant Coast in Zululand is characterised by its deserted and spotlessly clean beaches bordered by green forest reminiscent of a secluded island paradise. Romantic getaways are also available at a selection of five star game lodges. Thonga Beach Lodge is a sublime beach hideaway on the Maputaland Coast which embraces coastal charm at its best.

The rolling terrain of the South Coast is blanketed with sugarcane plantations which extend all the way down to the quiet and secluded beaches. Selborne Hotel, Spa & Golf Estate is a resort in the well-visited South Coast town of Pennington, a mere hour's drive from Durban.

Hartford House offers old-world charm and new-world luxury at their retreat in Mooi River, an area of the Drakensberg Mountains. The surrounding escarpment is a favourite location for exhilarating hot air balloon rides and other romantic pastimes.

Honeymoons in the Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is arguably South Africa's favourite bush honeymoon destination. The park stretches a colossal 350km from North to South and 60km from East to West. Luxurious game lodges tend to be concentrated in the southern part of the park in a concession called the Sabi Sands. The Sabi Sands and various other smaller concessions share a fenceless border with Kruger, allowing game to wander freely. These private reserves offer some of the best game viewing in the country as well as five-star luxury in the African bush.

Notable game lodges for honeymoon getaways include the famous Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, Singita Ebony and Boulders, and Simbambili all of whom will go out of their way to create a honeymoon experience like no other.

North West Province

The Pilanesburg National Park is located in the North West Province of South Africa and is characterised by the seemingly endless savannah plains within its boundaries and the Big Five game which make the park their home. Open air game drives and animal tracking provide thrilling entertainment whilst outstanding cuisine and hospitality ensures that guests spend their stay at the Ivory Tree Game Lodge in splendour and indulgence.

A honeymoon should be an intimate and special romantic getaway, a perfect way for a couple to begin their life together and special enough to create memories to last a lifetime. South Africa features ample opportunities for honeymooners to enjoy their perfect escape, no matter what their individual tastes may be.

Exclusive Getaways offer a traveller's collection of luxury accommodation in South Africa, including accommodation for a honeymoon in South Africa.

The month long, city wide shopping festival will turn Johannesburg into a consumer heaven. All participating major retail and wholesale shopping areas in the city will offer shoppers huge discounts of all merchandise.

A shopping festival of this sort is unique to Africa, and will be strategically hosted in September to coincide with Heritage Month activities, including Arts Alive, Soweto Festival and national Tourism Month. The festival is only the start of some big plan to turn Joburg into Africa's shopping hub; it would also encourage growth and promote investment in the retail sector. It is based on an idea used in world shopping centers like Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Dubai. As far as fashion festivals go Dubai's festival is the biggest money-spinner, with consumers in the Middle Eastern country splashing out more than $3-billion over the month.

All shoppers can safely make purchases as organizers in conjunctions with one of the banking sponsors have created branded smart cards that will give shoppers a safe means to pay for their goods. People will easily be able to get their purchases shipped to their homes or hotels with co-ordinated shipping and logistical offers. There will also be safe and secure transport which will ferry shoppers between their hotels and shopping malls.

September is national tourism month and national heritage month in South Africa. Also in the Southern hemisphere September marks the beginning of Spring and end of winter close out sales. Getting the Best Seafood in Barcelona

The Mediterranean diet is world renowned as being balanced and key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. One of the cornerstones to this diet is fish and seafood, and Barcelona is an excellent place to try the fruits of the sea, with a busy port and plenty of options to get those taste buds tingling!

First of all, it has to be said that one of the most fun parts of trying seafood is to do it yourself. Barcelona has many markets with extremely fresh produce and with the extensive range of self-catering accommodation in the city, such as tourist apartments, it's great fun to pick up some local produce and make a meal in, or prepare a barbeque on your terrace. Gone are the days of worrying about properly cooked fish, or seafood which might disagree with you ' Barcelona's fishmongers are the happiest in recommending different ways to prepare your catch of the day, and personally, I have learned many techniques of different ways to prepare fish and seafood from many friendly fishmongers. The famous Boqueria market on the central Las Ramblas street is a great stop to view different types of seafood and fish, but the Barceloneta and Sant Antoni markets are equally central, stocking the same produce and are often less crowded. Whether it's ingredients for Paella, a Peruvian cebiche or fresh sardines for the barbeque - head down to the markets early and stock up on the catch of the day.

If you prefer to be waited upon, then you're spoilt for choice in Barcelona. With so many seafood restaurants to choose from, and every city guide book often choosing different ones, I'll try and recommend a few of my own experiences and some of the un-missable spots, too.

The old fisherman's quarters of La Barceloneta lie right next to the beach and those narrow streets have some of the oldest and most established restaurants serving the freshest fish and seafood to this day. So when the new red-brick building which now houses the Catalan History Museum was commissioned, there was to be space underneath for the select few restaurants from Barceloneta to choose their spot. In a nutshell, the best places in the old fisherman's neighbourhood were given their choice of restaurant space. Now, since then, in my opinion, some of those restaurants have let their standards slide a little, given the fact that they will easily fill tables on their terraces on a summer's day due to the prime location. This is all apart from one ' El Merendero de la Mari ' which has maintained the best standards since 'Mari' used to make the broth for the Paella and those Mariner's mussels. For me, they just have got everything right, from the waiters and the crockery and cutlery (sounds stupid, I know, and I'm no restaurant critic, but things like that stick in your mind!) to the wine and the speed of service.

Just along the way from El Merendero, and of a completely different ilk, is El Rey de la Gamba. Here it's a much more modest place, with paper napkins, waiters who shout the orders back to the kitchen, and the like, but it's always busy, and they have a great turnover of the fish, so it's always fresh. The biggest reason for me including this place as well, is that the portions are huge! Often we have gone in a group of four and ordered a seafood platter and Paella for two ' and had plenty of leftovers for a doggy bag, too!

Staying in Barceloneta, is the new addition to the Michelin restaurants in the city - Lluçanés which moved to the Barceloneta Market earning itself a star in the process. Here Angel Pascual does what he has been doing best for 16 years at the other location, providing hearty, earthy ingredients in interesting combinations. Perhaps one of the other classic restaurants (that also used to be Michelin starred) is one of the only places outside Barceloneta which does great seafood - Botafumeiro. For nigh on 30 years, Wacky chef Moncho Neira and his team up on Gran de Gracia have been proving that you don't need to be next to the port for great seafood.

Everything You Need to Know about Applying for a Passport

I don't know about you, but I always considered a passport a somewhat exotic thing. Something that only world travelers used, full of the official entrance stamps from all the places they'd visited. I did know it was pretty important, as any movie about a US citizen in a foreign country made clear. Lose your passport or have it confiscated and you were stuck and couldn't go home!

But things have changed and anyone that wants to travel, or who wants a reliable and unquestioned means of proving their identity, needs a passport. Since getting a passport means meeting a list of very specific requirements, once you do have a passport you'll find it's accepted worldwide as a valid identification.

If you've never had a passport, it may seem like there's lots to do even before applying. But you'll need to gather all your information once, as renewals are easier and less hassle. You'll have to apply for your first passport in person, so your identity can be verified. There are lots of places which can issue a passport, with the most convenient being the U.S. Post Office. Government and city agencies also qualify, so find a location that's close to you.

You'll need to fill out a DS-11 "Application for U.S. Passport", which can be picked up in person or downloaded via the internet. One word of caution, however, if you plan on printing your application at home, be sure you have a new ink cartridge and your printout is clear with no blurring or illegible areas. Otherwise, your carefully completed form will be sent right back to you unprocessed. Also, by all means, don't sign the form before turning it in. It has to be witnessed so your signature can be verified.

You'll also need documentation that confirms your citizenship. Most people use their Birth Certificate, but be sure it's a "certified" copy. I tried to use my old hospital issued birth certificate - the one with an ink print of my little baby feet - and discovered that only my Mom would accept it. Other types of documents will also work such as a Naturalization Certificate or Certificate of Citizenship. If you can get 2 original copies, that'd be a good idea, as you must mail an original along with your application. It will be sent back with your passport, but keep an extra just to be safe.

Passports also need a very specific type of photograph. If you apply at a post office, you'll be able to get your photo taken right there. There's a fee, so be prepared to pay about $10.00 to $20.00 for the 2 that are required.

It cost at least $97.00 for a normal passport application, plus more if you need it in a hurry. Typically the wait is 2 to 3 weeks but that could stretch on longer if there's a backlog. Expedited applications will run you another $60.00, plus even more for overnight delivery.

There are, as you can see, lots of hoops to jump through when applying for a passport, but once you're done, you'll be ready for all that world traveling!
